Hey, I'm Dr. Lydia!
I believe in the power of second chances, the beauty of real, imperfect relationships, and possibility.
For over 35+ years, I've had the privilege of walking alongside people as they navigate the complex terrain of love, connection, and personal healing. What I've discovered is that most relationship advice misses something fundamental: when we struggle to connect, we're just using tools that aren't necessarily a good fit for the job.
The Story Behind My Work
Twenty-five years ago, I found myself sitting across from my own divorce mediator... a moment that changed everything about how I understood relationships.
Here I was, a trained therapist with a successful practice helping couples, yet my own marriage was ending. The irony wasn't lost on me, but more than that, it was devastating for me and my family...
That experience became my greatest teacher. I decided to get to the core of what had caused the disconnection in my own relationship, so I could truly understand - for myself and my clients - what makes a thriving partnership possible.
The Second Chapter
My second marriage of two decades thrives today, not because we’re perfect, but because we approach relationship differently. We’ve learned that:
-
Conflict itself isn’t the problem - how we handle it is
-
Real acceptance always creates space for change
-
Emotional skills can be developed and honed at any stage of a relationship
-
Difficult conversations are inevitable, but they can still be constructive for the relationship as a whole
These insights moved from theoretical concepts to practical tools that shaped how we connect. They supported my ability to create a new future with someone I love.
Bridging Buddhism and Neuroscience
My personal journey led me deeper into Buddhist philosophy, particularly around acceptance and non-dual thinking. But being a bit of a scientist at heart, I knew I needed to understand the "why" behind the "what."
That's when I discovered how beautifully neuroscience explains what Buddhist teachers have known for centuries: Our brains are designed to protect us, but those same protective mechanisms often don’t support us to be deeply connected to the very people we love most.
Understanding the brain and amygdala's role in reactivity helped me recognize my own triggers and choose different responses. This integration of ancient wisdom and modern science became the foundation of everything I teach today.
More Than Just Dr. Lydia
I’m a woman who wears many hats:
-
A wife who still does her best to practice what she teaches daily (some days better than others!)
-
A proud dog parent (...please excuse the dog hair)
-
A mother enjoying weekly dinners with my son and his wife, and co-authoring a book or two with my daughter
-
A late-life gym enthusiast (something about old dogs can learn new tricks, right?)
-
A woman who believes deeply in second chances and new chapters
A Different Approach to Healing
I've come to learn that most relationship advice gets it backwards!
We're told to "let it go" or "forgive and forget," but I've watched too many people try to force forgiveness before they've found real acceptance, and it simply doesn't work.
Here's what I've discovered: People often mistake acceptance for passive resignation. Instead, it's the active choice to stop fighting reality so you can respond from clarity instead of reactivity. When you truly accept what is, you lay the foundation for meaningful change.
This, of course, doesn't mean accepting harmful behavior or staying in situations that are hurtful. It fundamentally means responding from wisdom rather than wounds.
The Work That Fills My Heart
Every day, I have the honor of witnessing ordinary people do extraordinary things. I watch them find the courage to choose a new way forward, both for themselves and their relationships.
Whether through therapy, courses, or writing, I love helping people understand that relationship struggles are not character flaws. We all have learned patterns that we can shift with the right tools and a willingness to grow.
No matter what hurt you may have experienced or been part of, please know that your story isn't over! In fact, I have a feeling your next chapter might be the most beautiful one yet.
